Meditation For Older People: A How-To Guide for Mindfulness Meditation Groups
This practical guide gives information and resources on running meditation groups with older people, in any setting. Drawing on examples from recent research with frail older people living in a residential aged-care setting, this guide will not only help facilitators to understand the many benefits of mindfulness meditation, but also to develop the skills and confidence required to run both short- and long-term meditation groups with older people.

‘Transformative Learning is an adult education-based theory that suggests ways in which adults make meaning and experience “deep Learning” of their lives. Transformative Learning examines what it takes for adults to move from a limited knowledge of knowing to a greater sense of awareness and develop self–authorship. It is a process of “soulfulness” and intuition and can lead to conscious or unconscious meaning-making.’

Study: Mindfulness meditation in residential aged care
Beaté’ s research publication aims to provide better emotional and spiritual support to older people living in residential aged care. The study evaluates what residents considered were the benefits of participating in a mindfulness meditation group and how it enhanced their spiritual growth/wellbeing.

When Pat, an 87-year-old who had been living in aged care for seven years, realised that she was too frail to attend her grandson’s wedding, she was devastated. Seeing how upset she was, Beaté Steller, a spiritual care practitioner at Southern Cross Care, decided to bring the wedding to Pat. Through compassionate conversations with Pat and her family, and the support of appropriate technology, Beaté was able to create an event that enabled Pat to ‘virtually’ attend her grandson’s wedding.
Tech Connect is a guide for leaders in aged care to support aged care residents’ spiritual wellbeing by connecting with family and loved ones using technology/social media.
The TechConnect program has benefits for older people living in care, their family members, and for staff/volunteers who participate. Tech Connect events are not only about the technology, but more importantly about the relationships that deepen in the lead up to an event, and afterwards.
The guide provides an overview of the program, from planning, implementation through to evaluation. It also provides a special section on using technology to maintain relationships for older people living with dementia

“Thank you for your dedication and commitment to make James and Caitlin’s wedding celebration so special and memorable for Mum. She felt so included and valued throughout the whole experience.”
Family feedback following Tech-Connect event
“Very clear presentation, and easy to follow. The document articulates well both the rationale and the practical application aspects. It also makes for good reading to have Pat’s story woven throughout.”
